The Castillo de Colomares
Embark on a journey to medieval time, with a day trip just half an hour from Palacio Solecio by car.
Located in the highest area of Benalmádena on the Costa del Sol, with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounded by the light so characteristic of the south of Spain, is the Castillo de Colomares.
This building that looks like a castle is a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus and his arrival in the New World, as a particular homage to the discovery of America.
The monument was built by Dr Esteban Martín from 1987 – 1994 and is a mixture of several styles, all filled in details that tell the story of the expedition. For example:
At the monument’s structure, the bows of the three caravels stand pointing west, as in the original route of the discoverer.
Another example of the number of features is found on the façade, where one can find references to the House of Aragon and the House of Castile, the evangelization of the New World, the monastery of La Rábida and Palos de la Frontera.
All these references, together with other characteristic elements such as the fountains, the graves, the pointed towers, the tank or the beautiful stained glass windows make the Castillo de Colomares a visit worth for.
